Walking Pictures #36

Garage, Louisville, KY 2009 © jwl

Here's another photo from my trip to Louisville in May. The work is so fresh in my mind that it is hard to believe that is was so long ago. The first image I posted from the trip was from the interior of this garage. That show was very stylized and odd (for me), this image is much more simple and honest.

King Of Adams County

I went by the Adams County Flea market a couple of weeks ago to get some new fodder for my budding portfolio of Antiques, Fireworks & Flea Markets. I had been here photographing 6 years ago, but I didn't get very much work. Unfortunately, the market was closed but this guy was there and we spent some time together.

New WI Work

My whole trip through WI last week wasn't spent lamenting about losing time. I found some new art along the way as well. This was a gift I was given that day.

Retrace My Own Steps

I spent some time out on the country roads of WI last week. I had a wonderful day. I decided to retrace some steps that I had taken a few years ago and try and make art along the way. I found a space that I had been in on the last journey and decided to document what was there (or not). I also photographed the pile of wood that was once this structure (not pictured).

This is not new phenomenon for me, but it never gets easier. I am not sure what it means to me, but I spend a great deal of time with these spaces, albeit in photographic form, and so when they disappear from view I get a feeling of loss.

Portrait #14

AJ Dusek, Milwaukee WI 2009 © jwl

AJ came up Friday to go to the race @ The Milwaukee Mile with me (sadly it was rained out). He reluctantly sat for a few portraits and we got some good stuff. For whatever reason he wanted me to try to leave his face out so I tried to please him and myself at the same time. I'm glad he came by, I always enjoy seeing him.

Here are a couple more of the new images I made on my trip to Louisville last month with Chad Pelton. I will be finished with the scanning soon, and I hope to print a suite from the work there. Chad and I are also loosely discussing a joint book project of our work there.

I was just sent a link to a good little interview of my main man Fred Stonehouse. I will add that he is truly a good fella and a constant source of inspiration. I myself owe him a beer or two. Check out the interview and his work here.

I got my film from Louisville back from the lab today. Looks like I am gonna be scanning for a while. From what I can tell, I have quite a few good photographs from the trip. My friend Chad was there as well working on photos and I think we are going to try and make a portfolio of our combined efforts.

This was an image that I was looking forward to seeing (it is coming out of the printer right now), I remember feeling drawn to everything in the scene. As far as the River Town project is concerned, I think a few more towns and we will see what it all means.

Walking Pictures #31

Vine & Rail, Milwaukee 2008 © jwl

I have a collection of small 35mm cameras. I have always had an affection for the pocket sized nature of them. I usually have them laying around loaded with film ready to take a walk. Since I recently bought my rather powerful digital pocket camera, I haven't put much time in with the little film bangers.

This shot was probably shot last summer on one of my early walks in the neighborhood. Interestingly, I was just talking with Chad Pelton about how I don't shoot a lot of detail images.

Portrait #13

Ana Minter, Milwaukee 2009 © jwl

Last week I got a commission to make senior portraits for Ana Minter. She wanted something different from the norm as far as the form was concerned, so of course I went with my white box portraits style. She did a great job and made it easy for me to do mine.
