Then & Now

Messenger, Chicago, Illinois 1997

While looking through Troy Freund's work, discussing his future show, I stumbled upon a photograph of a bicyclist which reminded me of some old work that I had done. I later set out to find the negative and did a quick scan of the image. This Bike Messenger was shot while I was on an Architetctural Study trip from the University of Tennessee. Then, aspiring to be an architect, I used the camera as a sketching tool more often than a pencil. This was dismissed and frowned upon by my professors, but as we can now see I persisted. Eventually I quit Architecture as a persuit and went full steam into Photography. That was ten years ago.

This image reminds me of so many things, so many that it seems unreal. I look at my work now and see the last six years of driving and thinking about the highway and the forms there, the work is nowhere near where I started. I believe, fully, that this is a testament to how we change and evolve over time as we find ourselves and our place in the world. I wonder if I might dig deeper and have a "10 Years Later" show.

Recycled Collections

Chad Pelton, Finding 2006

In July, we are proud to have the work of Chad Pelton in the Main Gallery. Pelton is a former bear trapper turned freelance graphic designer in Knoxville, TN. Assembled from a massive collection of old magazines and print ads, Pelton’s collage work speaks of politics, relationships & life choices with humor and a mindful design eye. The show will run July 5 - August 18 and there will be a Gallery Night Reception for Pelton on July 27, 5P – 9P, as always we will have some great refreshments and plenty of fun.

Invitation Accepted

Troy Freund, Street, NYC

I spent some time last Saturday looking at some work and discussing the upcoming Photo Invitational with Troy Freund. He brought boxes, BOXES of images to sift through and I loved them. I never pass an opportunity to look at someone's work. After looking through it and seeing where he felt most excited, we decided to use some recent panoramic images for the show. Along with Troy, I am also excited to see how they will play along with the two other invited artists, Justin Burks and Scott Johnson.

I chose the three of them specifically when thinking of what to to for the Invitational in 2008. Justin was slated to be in the Photo Invitational 2007 show, but complications excluded him and we rescheduled. Using him as an anchor I decided to look at other photographers whose personal vision and drive seemed to fill their work despite the subject. Albeit, I did decide to reign them in a bit and concentrate on the people aspect of their work. Troy is a hard working photographer and I thought it would be nice to give him something other than editorial and wedding work to think about. In a way I think that it will be an opportunity to show work that he may not have otherwise shown. Scott Johnson is a similar case, the man is BUSY, so I decided to throw him one more bone to chew on and maybe let some of those creative juices flow for all of us. I know there are thousands of photographs around that man, so don't we deserve to see them? Nonetheless, 2008 will kick off with a bang with the Photo Invitational.

One of the key reasons I opened a gallery in the first place was to look at work and provide a place for people to see art, show art, and learn about art. Whether you are an artist or just wanting to talk about things feel free to come by. As I said, I will never turn anyone away when it comes to looking work. I can't promise that everyone will have a show when they leave, but we will definitely get to talking about the work. I suppose I am writing this here to take away some of the anxiety around showing your work to an artist or a gallery owner. I invite you to set up an appointment and become part of the community.

I look forward to seeing everyone soon.

Nice Words

I would like to extend a Thank You to Katherine Murrell for the kind words she wrote about my work this week. She posted a short article on the Susceptible To Images site regarding the FORWARD show at the Charles Allis Art Museum. Katherine went itnto some good detail when speaking of my photograph.

Thanks again Katherine.

Thanks

Bobby Spillman, The Golden Ticket, 2006

I would like to thank everyone who came out to the Bobby Spillman reception last Friday. It was a wonderful time an I hope to see everyone in July for the Gallery Night reception for Chad Pelton.

Bobby had an exceptional visit to Milwaukee and his gallery talk was well received.

I would especially like to thank Lakefront Brewery for the beer, Comet Cafe for the pies and coffee, and my party planners Adam and Val.

Thanks again to everyone. We will see you soon.

Fast Cars

Wall Mural #2, Bristol, Tennessee 2006

My mom called me a few days ago to let me know she got the tickets. Considering the idea impossible, I had already forgotten that I asked her to get me some. Lo and behold, I am going to the race in August. It is a night race, one of the biggest of the year. After the race a couple of months ago (there are 2 a year) they completely ripped the track apart to resurface it. So August will have a brand new track, it will be a lot of fun.

Growing up 20 miles from Bristol, I took for granted the idea of NASCAR. My uncles and cousins were always watching races on Sunday at my grandmother's house. I would be there playing with my toys, eating fried apple pies, drawing, and the race would always be on in the background. Once I made my way to Wisconsin, I found myself without a real ritual on Sunday. Most people have football, but I grew up thinking of football as a Friday night and Saturday afternoon sport. We only cared about High School and College ball, Sunday is for fast cars.

Long story short, I have learned a lot about myself in the last few years and I am definitely a race fan. Thanks, Mom.
